I usually would not blog about such a thing as my postpartum appointment but I just have to for memory sake. On Firday was my appointment with Pam who delivered Kreed. I just love her, she has the best bubbly personality and is just one heck of an awesome midwife. When she came into the room she was disappointed that I did not bring Kreed but he was sleeping and Christian was home so I just decided to leave him home. I did however bring her a birth announcement with a sweet message to the midwives on it. I made them all homemade sugar scrubs to say thank you...I am all about useful thank you's instead of just a card. I wrote it to all of the midwives because they all saw me through my case with pProm and they all supported me 100%! It read....
Dear Midwives,
"I want to thank you for your constant support with my pregnancy and pProm case. Words cannot express how grateful I am for all of you. You as midwives are amazing and one of the reasons I hold a healthy baby boy in my arms today. My heart is full of complete gratitude. Thank you for believing in miracles!"
Pam read that that and got a little teary eyed and said, "really it is just a miracle isn't it?" She then told me that her side of the story to my birth. She told me that the doctors on the outside were watching the monitors like a hawk and just looking for reason to come in. She said that I was doing so good in my labor that she knew everything was going to be just fine. She kept saying, "you rocked it girl, you really knew what you were doing...you know how to give birth to babies!" LOL, she is so funny! The doctor that was on call was one of the doctors that was rudest to me with my case with pProm. She wanted to have me deliver at 34 weeks no matter what and I simply refused. After they sent me home on bed rest she was absolutely livid about the the whole situation and was very rude to me. She would always try and bully me into thinking I was not doing the right thing for my baby. I knew I was and what she did not know is that I knew my body way better then she did. Anyway, she was the doctor that happen to be on call that night. Pam told me she kept insisting that I have internal monitors on and and Pam being the wonderful midwife that use is down right told her, "NO!" She also told me she knew during labor that I was getting frustrated that they had to monitor me on the outside but she assured me that it was only to keep the doctors at bay.. so she just wanted to let me know that. I was so happy to hear that and that she really cared about me and my birth plan. I did not want the pit or the epidural because I did not want a reason for the doctors to say, "we need to intervene because she has had, this, this and this!" She really made that happen even when I was at my breaking point towards the end. She told me that despite of his prematurity that I totally could of had him at home. Home birth is something I have always thought about and is probably somewhere in my future. She just kept saying, "Your birth was just so cool, it was literally so awesome!" Yes it was, and it was just the way I wanted it and I thanked her for letting it pan out the way that it did. She then said to me, "I have to drive pretty far to come to work and some days I ask myself if it worth it. Your birth reminded me of why I love my job, it really was one of the most beautiful births I have ever witnessed and will never forget it or you!" WOW, I was simply flattered! She also exclaimed how impressed she was by my team. She really loved my Doula and she said, "Christian was just rolling with you every step of the way." Not everyone has the kind of team I did and she said that really makes a huge difference with how your labor goes.
She checked me over and said everything looked good. She cleared me to start working out again...YAY! I was almost down to my pre pregnancy weight too..YAY! It was funny because when she checked me she had to check my kegel muscles to see how well they were working and she was honestly so shocked! She said, "holy cow women they are strong, have you been working on them recently?" I told her no and then she said that I should be happy they are still very strong after baby number 3. I really do love Pam, she is one of the best midwives and I just connected with her so much. We hugged each other and somewhat said our goodbyes since I will not be having any more planned children out here, there would be really no reason for me to see her again. I will never forget her with how she played a huge roll in getting my little Kreed safely and naturally here. I left that office with a HUGE smile on my face that is for sure.
When I think back of what I had to go through it just makes my heart so full love. Some women honestly go through hades and back when their water breaks early. I belong to a pProm support group where I read about what these women go through and some of it is just awful! I was one of the lucky ones where it broke later in gestational age. Some women water breaks so early and doctors bully them into terminated the pregnancy. Some women find out later that they could have kept the babies and at least given then a chance and then they are really so devastated. Even though mine broke later I still know how it feels to be bullied and treated poorly. I know that doctors have to go off stats and protocol but sometimes I wish they would look outside the box. This is why I loved midwives because they knew the logistics of what was going on but yet they listen to what they felt was right. I went against the odds. Pam told me that, "we do not see cases like yours ever!" I do feel very fortunate since I know some women are not so lucky when this happens to them. I asked Pam if I have to worry about this again since my husband and I want a big family. She said, "you have asked me this a million times and the answer is still the same..NO!" Everyone has a 10-15% chance of this happening and I had no preterm labor when my water ruptured let alone not even one single contraction! Of course I will worry next time but that will be expected. I am not sure why it happened but I just like to think of it as a growing and learning experience. I would never wish it upon anyone but I hope that I can pay it forward by supporting other women through this tortuous thing called pProm (preterm pre rupture of the membrane).
This is a funny cartoon that basically sums it up...LOL!
This one is so TRUE too...
I guess I can now say that I was once a pPROM QUEEN!!
